Welcome to ColoredIn!

Here at ColoredIn I want to focus on the promotion and analysis of multicultural YA fantasy/ sci-fi literature. While I was in high school, I found a book called Manifest by Artist Arthur. The story highlighted the lives of three African- American teenagers with mystical powers. I was in love with the book. I had never seen anything like it before. However, once the infatuation with the story wore off, the fact that I had never found another fantasy book with a black female main character bothered me.

That feeling of injustice stays with me to this day and drives me to research multicultural young adult literature. I do believe that this genre of literature is so important and pivotal to the lives of young adults. Being able to see oneself in the books you read is a privilege that not everyone is allowed. I want to change that for the sake of the all the young adults who will shape the culture of countries and the world.

This blog will be a platform for that change. We will have open discussions about race, sexuality, ethnicity and religiosity as they relate to the YA books we love. I want us to get the word out about the need for Multicultural YA books. Join the fight and help me color in our YA books!
